Space assets are under silent siege. Cybersecurity can’t be an afterthought.

Paul Maguire, Knowmadics Co-founder and CEO, was recently featured in a SpaceNews Op-Ed highlighting the rising threats facing U.S. space assets. The recent Viasat breach, linked to the Salt Typhoon campaign, is another stark reminder that space assets are under silent siege. As Maguire highlights, the real danger isn’t always service disruption, it’s the invisible groundwork adversaries lay during launch and early operations, when systems are most exposed.

He warns that current procurement practices exacerbate these risks, stressing the need for cybersecurity to be built in from the start. While legacy systems are also in danger of attack, they can still be reinforced by segmenting network access and updating threat monitoring capabilities.

Maguire argues a coordinated defense is vital to protect from “silent cyber siege,” where damage occurs long before visible service disruptions.
